Sawasdee River Kwai Lodge
Updated: Apr 15, 2020
Sawasdee River Kwai Lodge is in a quiet area of Kanchanaburi, yet it is only a 1.5 km, walk, cycle, or slightly longer drive to the famous Bridge over the River Kwai. The hotel consists of ten identical rooms which are split over two levels, the rooms are available with twin single beds or a double, either option gives you a mattress of very high quality. All rooms also benefit from free WiFi and cable flat screen TV's. The owners are very helpful and will usually offer guests a ride into town for a meal or night out, the taxi home will cost in the region of 100 Baht.
To the front of the rooms is a garden area with various tables and chairs and this is a great place to relax either during the day, or after a day of sight seeing activities in Kanchanaburi Province. The feature waterfall attracts birds, frogs and insect and the evening chorus can be quite loud as the frogs and insects compete with each other.
Adjacent to the garden is the main building of the hotel which houses reception and the breakfast area, a Western style breakfast is offered as standard but the staff are quite willing to change this if requested and if they are able to do so. It is also possible to order extra meals and any request is usually received with a positive answer, again where this is possible.
The hotel has free parking for vehicles and is situated in a very quiet Soi with very little traffic. Cycles are usually available for guests to use and a leisurely cycle down to the river only takes around five minutes, with slightly longer needed to go into the town itself. One very popular activity the hotel can arrange is kayaking on the River Kwai and under the bridge, with different options available starting from one hour kayaking, guests will be driven to a starting point (up-river) which will suit the length of tour selected.
For guest who would like to explore the region this hotel is a perfect choice. The owners are registered as tourist guides with years of experience in arranging any activities that the guests request, on top of this they add other activities into the day that the average visitor would never get to experience. For those who want to just do their own thing the owners will provide good advice and information on what is available.
The family run hotel is a brilliant place to relax and enjoy a few days (or longer) of peace and quiet, or alternatively energetic sightseeing activities that can leave you exhausted at the end of the day. Offering great value for money the owners do everything they possibly can to ensure every guest has a pleasant stay.
Trips I would recommend are;
Hell Fire Pass & museum.
Erawan Waterfalls, Erawan Natonal Park.
The War Cemeteries (Kanchanaburi, Chungkai).
Wat Tham Suea
Krasae Cave and Wampoo Viaduct
Riding the Death Railway
Other activities are also great but these were just 'my' favourites and will be reviewed separately.
